Nissan Terrano Overview

Nissan India has launched the new 2017 Nissan Terrano facelift priced at Rs 9.99 lakh to Rs 14.2 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). It’s been more than three years since the Terrano was launched in October 2013 and had received only one update, when the Terrano Groove Edition was launched. Nissan has introduced 22 new features with the 2017 Nissan Terrano facelift, and some much-needed features include – the new 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation and voice recognition. Other features comprise of – electrically operable ORVMs, hill climb assist and cruise control. The interior too has been spruced up with a nice black and brown dual-tone colour scheme along with new fabrics or leather upholstery, depending on the variant. The steering wheel has been redesigned and now gets controls for telephony and audio. Thankfully, Nissan has also provided an armrest for the driver in the 2017 Nissan Terrano. The buttons for power windows are now illuminated and the wing mirrors now get integrated indicators.

Nissan Terrano Design & Style

At first glance a very untrained eye might not notice the Renault Duster that this Nissan is based on. And that’s fair given that almost every body panel on the Terrano is new except for the roof and rear quarter panel. The design seems more grown up and sophisticated when compared with the Duster. The front is what sees the most change with a completely new face that’s very in line with Nissan’s family look. The grille is all new and is a larger, more modern iteration of those three piece affairs we’re used to seeing on SUVs like the Patrol. The headlamps are sleeker and more angular but blend well into the grille.

The bonnet is also completely redesigned and features two lines that flow into the grille. Fresh bumpers make for a smarter housing for the fog lamps while the air dam ends in a bash guard in a similar fashion to the Duster. The exaggerated wheel arches from the Duster remain but the Terrano’s sharper visage reduces the overtly muscled impression you get from the Duster. New 16-inch wheels fill those arches quite well and the Terrano boasts high ground clearance that gives it an imposing look. The side profile is perhaps the most reminiscent of the Duster but even here both doors have been redesigned and they get a new line along the base that gives the side a little more definition. The B and C pillars have been blacked out. The rear also gets a thorough make over with more angular tail lamps that fill in those metal blanks much better than the Dusters lamp’s. It’s nice to see that the Nissan has made the rear lamps fully functional and they aren’t simply dummy plastic pieces added onto the sides. The sharp rear design complements the face well.

Nissan Terrano Cabin & Comfort

The Nissan Terrano has comfortable ingress and egress. Once you enter the cabin, the beige treatment of interiors gives a good sense of space. Nissan has spruced up the dashboard layout, which feels slightly more premium than the Duster. The storage space on top of the dashboard has been covered now with a lid and the centre AC vents get rectangular in shape with chrome outlining. The instrument cluster covering has a rounded panel and the steering wheel remains the same that gets a rebadged horn pad with silver accents. The centre console is restyled with vertical silver panels running on the sides and piano black panels surrounding the new multimedia system.

These additional embellishments make the interior styling a bit more attractive than the Duster. Quality of the materials used and the fit and finish is exactly the same again, which is much better than the competition but doesn’t feel as premium as a car in this price bracket should feel. The base XE trim comes with black interior, while the rest get beige interior. Colour combination used in the Terrano gels nicely and looks tastefully done, thanks to the piano black finishing. The air conditioning is effective and the vents provide thick flow of air. Everything falls under reach and most of the controls are convenient to use apart from the mirror adjustment control that is placed under the handbrake lever. You will also miss the dead pedal to rest your foot on long drives. Nissan should have addressed the minor ergonomic issues which customers of the Duster have been complaining about since quite some time now.

The door pockets are deep enough to accommodate 1-litre bottles and there is enough spread of cup holders and small storage elements to keep knick knacks. Cabin space needs a special mention here, as there is ample space in both the rows as well as the boot. The seats are sufficiently supportive but lacking a bit of under-thigh support. The 475-litre boot space is practical with a convenient loading lip that can accommodate a good load of luggage. Some of the safety and convenience features offered in the Terrano include dual airbags, ABS, EBD, BA, fog lamps, reverse parking sensors, rear AC, double-din audio system with CD/MP3, USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity. Shockingly the steering mounted audio controls found on the Duster are not offered on the Terrano.

Nissan Terrano Engine & Gearbox

The Terrano comes in three different engine trims which include one petrol and two diesel. The specifications remain identical to that of the Duster. The 1598cc petrol engine churns out 104PS at 5850 rpm and a torque of 145 Nm at 3750 rpm. It has a 5 speed manual transmission and Nissan claims a mileage of 13.2 Kmpl.The petrol engine is smooth and not very audible. The 1.6L petrol engine seems perfect for city commute as it does not offer any kick as such but then in traffic conditions it is at its best. The gear shifts feel a bit notchy and can be bettered with a smoother shift movement.

This is not a typical rev friendly petrol engine as it feels underpowered at lower engine speeds. As the engine speed is raised, it gets more audible but then the lag in the delivery also gets very evident. Also, the petrol version gets Hydraulic power assisted steering. It delivered a mileage of 9.5 kmpl.The 1.5L lower spec diesel engine produces 85PS at 3750 rpm and a torque of 200 Nm at 1900 rpm. This engine is also equipped with a 5 speed manual transmission. The prime reason for having a lower spec diesel engine is for the mileage friendly consumers. This one being a diesel feels nice on torque.

This engine too has a lag but then it being a diesel unit tries to overcome it. It takes serious effort to make the vehicle reach higher speeds. The steering is very active in giving feedback and sometimes it gets a little too aggressive. Overtaking in a fully loaded condition is a stress as the notchy gears and the lag in the engine make it very difficult. This one scored more on mileage compared to the other two at 15 Kmpl After trying both the underpowered variants, it was finally time for me to drive the 110PS version. This remains my favorite with its superb power delivery. It produces a power of 110PS at 3900 rpm and a torque of 248 Nm at 2250 rpm. It also comes with a 6 speed manual transmission.

Crank it up and it feels the same until you shift it to the first gear. Cross 1700 rpm and the engine feels very much in control. The torque delivery is fantastic when it comes to the 110 PS model. In fact, I find this engine more athletic compared to that of the EcoSport in terms of sheer drive feel.

Nissan Terrano Driving Dynamics

The Nissan Terrano is not a hard core SUV but instead an off roader. Don’t let that fool you as this vehicle can take a good amount of off roading bruise. We did manage to make it climb places and go on terrains which only an SUV is capable of. The suspension setup of Mcpherson struts for front and torsion beam axle at the rear works in tandem in keeping the vehicle afloat on hard roads.

Maneuvering the Terrano is very easy as it has a turn radius of 5.2m. The Terrano feels very light when it comes to steering it out of tight corners. There are occasions especially at high speeds and on rough patches where the steering feedback is too aggressive. In addition to this the bolstering on the steering wheel is also not sufficient.There is minimal body lag owing to its height. Reaching triple digit speeds is not a task at all in this. However, even this one feels a bit stressed when fully loaded but then the gear shifts in this are less. The 6 speed manual transmission does a fair job to this engine as in the other two it is missed greatly. The shift quality is decent. The only aspect where it didn’t score is in its braking which is very poor.

Nissan Terrano Safety & Security

We loved the Duster for its braking performance and the Terrano with the same Disc/drum setup performs very well. The car came to a halt from 100kmph in a short 40.24m which is just a little shorter than the Duster. The Terrano shows the same confidence shedding speeds in a straight line without any squirming at the steering wheel and with good control from the ABS.

Kit levels in the Terrano are exactly what you get in the Duster. In the safety department you get two airbags, ABS, a reverse parking sensor, and a bash guard to protect your engine when on rough terrain. The XV offers keyless entry, two 12V sockets, tilt adjustable steering and height adjustable seats. With the good comes the bad and the Terrano carries forward the Duster’s negative points as well. The seating position isn’t perfect and the driver’s seat still has the tendency to rock slightly under braking. The controls for the ORVMs still lie in that awkward position under the handbrake while the rear power windows are in the same position in the door pads and that has you accidentally opening the windows every time you rest your elbow. These are just minor niggles and none of them are a deal breaker but the fact is that they still exist

Nissan Terrano Verdict

The Terrano doesn’t really offer anything over the Duster besides the significant styling differences. However we believe the Terrano will be well received because it’s a handsome and more premium looking design and will appeal to those who think the Duster has become a little pass. The significantly tweaked visuals and similar kit should be incentive enough to spend what we believe will be Rs 50,000 to 70,000 more than the equivalent Duster. Nissan will start taking pre-sales bookings from the first of September while the car will officially go on sale in October during the festival season. The compact SUV segment just got a hot new player.
